Gold?Īlso, another quick note – Satan appears a lot during the album, that’s right, Satan. But if you’re eating shit while grinning, today’s probably not your day anyway”. At least Mark is somewhat funny when calling Tom a retard and saying stuff like “you better wipe that shit-eating grin off your face. It’s just sophomoric humour for the sake of it, making jokes about shitting himself in bed, and swearing because swearing is funny with no context. The previous quote acts as a fine segway for this – in between most songs – if not all – Mark and Tom exchange a lot of blue-humoured jokes, with most of Tom’s being incredibly cringeworthy. Oh, ‘Aliens Exist’ has reminded me, there are a few songs where Mark/Tom replace a few lyrics, in this particular song, a notable occurrence is the changing of “my best friend thinks I’m just telling lies” for “my best friend thinks I’m just humping guys”. Naturally, ‘Don’t Leave Me’ and ‘Aliens Exist’ follow, and while they aren’t quite as awesome-sounding as ‘Dumpweed’ with its crazy pace and booming rawness, they’re still fine. Don’t get me wrong, ‘pop punk’ is still ‘punk’, but Blink-182 live in 2000 is much greater example of them being a punk band than any studio album they made from ‘Dude Ranch’ onwards. A good few songs have this great raw, edgy quality to them, I guess you could simply describe it as ‘punk rock’, which the overproduction of the band’s studio work at this point didn’t show off enough – there wasn’t enough grit. The live album starts with ‘Enema’ opener ‘Dumpweed’, and not only is this a much-improved version of the song, it’s actually one of the best songs on the record. As I’ve now mentioned it, I’ll start by talking about ‘Man Overboard’ – I love the main riff, I love the chorus, the lyrics are alright, good drumming performance from Travis Barker, it is a favourite of mine, as far as Blink-182 go anyway. Medical bum stuff aside (and there’s a lot of that), the album essentially starts off as a live companion piece of ‘Enema of the State’, which is pretty much what the entire album is anywhere, with a few sprinkles of other popular ones, a few interlude-esque joke songs, and a special new studio track at the end, ‘Man Overboard’, which has gone on to become one of Blink’s most famous singles. ‘The Enema Strikes Back’, which is a funny title, because enema puns… It's no surprise, then, that 2019's NINE, with its electronic instrumentation and more downcast, introspective themes, still resonated with their diehard followers-blink-182’s energetic, superbly crafted tunes and deeply emotional lyrics know no age limit. And we’re back! This time we’re looking at Blink-182’s 2000 live album, ‘The Mark, Tom and Travis Show’, a.k.a. A massive lineup change-DeLonge left the band in 2015 and was replaced by Alkaline Trio singer/guitarist Matt Skiba-didn’t slow them down, even as they and their fans grew up. Their sound matured considerably into the '00s, becoming more indebted to moody, muscular alternative rock, thanks in no small part to the crack-shot drumming and arrangements of Travis Barker, who joined in 1998. The trio's 1995 debut, Cheshire Cat, and 1997 commercial breakthrough Dude Ranch illustrate a fondness for breakneck-speed punk and sharply honed melodies, but blink-182 connected with bigger audiences in the later '90s because their rebellion offered both comic relief-see the nudity-heavy video for "What's My Age Again?", from 1999's Enema of the State-and seriousness, tackling the trauma of suicide ("Adam's Song") and divorce ("Stay Together for the Kids"). The San Diego band, who coalesced in the early '90s around co-frontmen Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus, blend upbeat tempos, catchy hooks and bawdy humour with lyrics that understand the pain of adolescence-and life in general. Pop-punk godfathers blink-182 embody why the genre appeals to millions.
